Uxua Casa Hotel & Spa

Uxua Casa is a Wilbert Das-designed bohemian-luxury hideaway on and around Trancoso's UNESCO-protected Quadrado, the grassy hilltop colonial square above the Atlantic on the Bahia coast. Around ten individually styled casas — restored five-hundred-year-old fishermen's houses facing the square, garden casas, a recycled-wood treehouse and a rooftop-pool casa — brim with Bahian art, salvaged antiques and Pataxó and Afro-Brazilian craft, most with a kitchen or kitchenette and several with private plunge pools. The open-air pool-side restaurant plates Bahian farm-to-table cooking and seafood, with guest-chef nights on Wednesdays, while UXUA Praia, the beach bar a short walk or shuttle away, pours drinks from a salvaged fishing boat. An aventurine-lined garden pool, the organic UXUA Vida spa with indoor and outdoor rooms and yoga, and the Quadrado's church, galleries and candlelit evenings complete the picture. Porto Seguro is the gateway, on a bed-and-breakfast base of Bahian breakfasts. Here authenticity and design are the luxury — made for couples and design-minded travellers drawn to bohemian Bahia.
