Mövenpick Resort Petra

Mövenpick Resort Petra is the Petra base — a heritage resort directly opposite the Petra visitor centre and main gate, around fifty metres away, where the location is the whole point. On Tourism Street in Wadi Musa, it is roughly two and a half hours from Amman and two from Aqaba, an inland resort with no beach but a peerless position for the ruins. Its 183 rooms and suites carry Arabesque interiors, antiques, natural stone and handcrafted wood, from Classic Rooms with courtyard or mountain views to a Royal Suite with awe-inspiring Petra-gateway views. Seven outlets set the mood: the candlelit Al Iwan, serving Mediterranean and Jordanian cooking and voted best restaurant in Jordan; the rooftop Al Ghadeer Roof Garden for sundowners and live music over Petra's hills; the all-day Al Saraya buffet; the Damascus-style Al Maqa'ad bar beneath a five-metre brass chandelier, with alcohol served; and a Lawrence-of-Arabia-themed tea room. A modest wellness centre adds an outdoor pool, steam bath and fitness. Walk to the Treasury at opening to beat the crowds and the heat; tours are arranged through the visitor centre and town operators. The hotel is a location-and-heritage stay, and the Petra base for a wider Jordan tour to Wadi Rum, Dana and Aqaba.
