Belmond Hotel Monasterio

Belmond Hotel Monasterio occupies a 1592 former monastery and seminary built on an Inca palace foundation, two blocks from Cusco's Plaza de Armas. Around a hundred and twenty rooms and suites sit among original stone cloisters and vaulted arches, from around twenty square metres up to one-bedroom suites with private terraces and butler service, and oxygen-enriched rooms are available to ease the three-thousand-three-hundred-and-ninety-nine-metre altitude. A gold-leaf chapel, an Escuela Cusquena art collection and a three-hundred-year-old cedar courtyard set the scene. El Tupay serves candlelit dinners in the stone-arched historic chapel with opera nights, a courtyard restaurant handles all-day dining and the Lobby Bar adds an Andean harpist, while the Therapy Suite works Andean-tradition treatments within the monastery walls. It is the classic Cusco heritage base for Machu Picchu, linked to the citadel by the Hiram Bingham luxury train, on a bed-and-breakfast base — made for couples and culture travellers who want to sleep inside Cusco's history, the cloisters and the chapel a working part of the stay.
