The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs

Kauri Cliffs is one of the world's celebrated golf-and-spa lodges, set on a 6,000-acre oceanfront working farm at Matauri Bay in Northland — near, not in, the Bay of Islands — with 180-degree Pacific views over Cape Brett and the Cavalli Islands. A Relais & Châteaux lodge now operating under Rosewood, it is around four hours' scenic drive north of Auckland, or a helicopter transfer. The par-72 clifftop course is ranked among the world's best, with holes played out over the ocean; three secluded private beaches lie below, and the spa is a sanctuary hidden in native totara forest with four treatment rooms, a couples room, sauna, jacuzzi and fitness centre. There are around twenty-two suites in colonial-plantation-style cottages, two to a cottage, looking over farmland, golf and ocean, alongside the multi-bedroom Owner's Cottage and four-bedroom Residences with private infinity pools — all ages are welcome. Chef-led dining runs over the Pacific on outdoor decks, built on Northland produce with fish often caught and cooked the same day, on a lodge-inclusive basis. Beyond the course lie horse riding along Matauri Bay's beaches, bush and farm walks from an ancient-kauri stroll to a private waterfall, mountain biking, tennis and deep-sea fishing out to the Cavalli Islands.
