Kamalame Cay

Kamalame Cay is a private ninety-six-acre island off the north-east coast of Andros, in the Bahamian Out Islands, reached only by private ferry or seaplane after a domestic flight to Andros — the most involved transfer of the Bahamas set, and the point of it. A three-mile beach runs along the Andros Barrier Reef, and the days are for world-class bonefishing on the Andros flats and the Joulter Cays, barrier-reef diving and snorkelling, kayaking the mangroves and time on the only overwater spa in the Bahamas. Around twenty-one rooms and suites take in bougainvillea-draped cottages, bungalows and Balinese beach houses, plus one- to four-bedroom villas, some with private plunge pools, each with its own golf cart; dining is Bahamian-meets-Asian on a choice of a la carte, all-meals or all-inclusive plans, with a Tiki Bar at the freshwater pool over the sand. Family-owned, barefoot and unplugged, it is the real out-island antidote to Nassau's glitz.
