InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa

The InterContinental Tahiti is the gateway resort for French Polynesia — the largest luxury resort on Tahiti island, spread over around 30 acres facing Moorea across the lagoon, just two to three kilometres (about five minutes) from Faa'a International Airport and 10 to 15 minutes from downtown Papeete. That makes it the natural first or last night in the islands, and it leans into that gateway role fully. Its 246 rooms and suites include garden, lagoon and panoramic ocean-and-Moorea-view rooms in low buildings, plus around two dozen overwater bungalows of about 37 square metres set around a private motu facing Moorea, each with a glass-bottom table and a split-level sundeck. There is no natural beach here; instead the resort has two freshwater infinity pools — the cascading, family-friendly Te Tiare pool with a shallow entry overlooking the lagoonarium, and the adults' sand-bottomed Le Lotus pool with a swim-up bar — and a natural lagoonarium of house-grown coral gardens where you can snorkel with sea turtles and hundreds of fish. Dining is a strength: Le Lotus is an overwater French restaurant widely rated the best table on Tahiti (it closes for a few weeks each January or February); Te Tiare is the all-day main restaurant, with Polynesian and Marquesan dinner shows; and the Tiki Bar has live music. The Deep Nature Spa works with Algotherm's marine-based products, and there is a dive centre and a shuttle into Papeete for Le Marche and the roulottes food trucks. It is honest about what it is — a polished, convenient gateway with the islands' best sunsets over Moorea — and it does that role better than anywhere.
