InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort

The InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort is Bill Bensley's clifftop masterpiece, and it announces itself the moment you arrive: a funicular, styled like a local boat, carries you down four named levels — Heaven, Sky, Earth and Sea — to a private bay on the Son Tra Peninsula. The setting is wild and rare: thirty-nine hectares inside the Son Tra Nature Reserve, Vietnam's last coastal rainforest, where red-shanked douc langurs live in the trees, fronting a 700-metre private beach. The design is pure Bensley theatre — temple-inspired, lotus and yin-yang motifs, Indochine colour — and the dining peaks at La Maison 1888, the MICHELIN-starred French restaurant set in a recreated colonial mansion that earned central Vietnam its first star. There is an Olympic-length pool with an underwater bar, pool villas with a round-the-clock host, and a Planet Trekkers kids' club. It is a secluded honeymoon-and-design icon about thirty minutes from the city and from Hoi An — a destination in its own right.
