Hacienda Zuleta

Hacienda Zuleta is a 1691 colonial working hacienda in the Andean highlands, two hours north of Quito in the Angochagua valley of Imbabura, at around two thousand nine hundred metres — owned by the family of former president Galo Plaza Lasso for over a century. Around twenty-one antique rooms in the historic main building each carry a wood-burning fireplace, antique furniture, hand-embroidered Zuleta linens and family heirlooms. Full-board home cooking comes from the four-thousand-acre organic farm, with its own dairy, cheese factory and trout, served at a communal table, and most activities are included. Days run to riding the hacienda's own Zuleteno horse breed across more than sixty kilometres of trails, the Condor Huasi project that returns Andean condors and spectacled bears to the wild, cheese-making, embroidery with the village women, pre-Inca mounds on the estate and tea with the family. Massage is on request, the fireside rooms warm against the highland air, and Otavalo and its famous market are thirty to forty minutes away. It is around two hours from Quito, on a full-board base — made for couples, families and riders who want immersive Andean heritage on a living farm. The valley sits in Imbabura, the province of lakes and volcanoes, with Otavalo's famous indigenous market thirty to forty minutes away and the snow peaks of the northern Andes on the horizon.
