Fogo Island Inn

Fogo Island Inn stands on stilts at the edge of the North Atlantic, off the coast of Newfoundland — a Todd Saunders design icon, a member of Relais & Chateaux, and one of only two Canadian properties to hold Three Michelin Keys. Its twenty-nine one-of-a-kind rooms and suites frame the ocean through floor-to-ceiling windows above handmade island furniture, from around thirty-three square metres through Newfoundland rooms with wood-burning stoves to the two-storey Flat Earth Suite with its lofted sleeping quarters and a soaker tub by the window. Stays are all-inclusive: every meal for two, a personal Community Host who pairs with you as a local guide, outer apparel and gear, and on-island transport, even a car, with alcohol the one exclusion. The single award-winning restaurant plates North Atlantic seafood, around eighty percent of its ingredients local, on a seven-seasons menu with a zero-waste ethos, alongside a foreshore Shed and a private cinema with popcorn and local taffy. There is no conventional spa or pool; instead, wood-fired rooftop saunas open to a North Atlantic cold-plunge, and the island itself is the wellness. The reward is the wild — icebergs on the Labrador Current, whales and puffins, foraging and cod-fishing. The Inn operates seasonally, roughly April to November, reached via Gander with a drive and a forty-five-minute ferry the Inn arranges — a community-owned social enterprise whose surpluses are returned to the island, made for couples and romantic escapes, with a few suites taking children aged eight and over.
